TWII Foundation Celebrates Our First Emergency Fund College Graduates

Last August 2016, the TWII foundation started a new emergency fund for girls who were enrolled in college but experienced a major incident that threatened their college completion. These funds were meant to get them over their hurdles and toward the finish line. We are proud to announce that our first two recipients, Rebecca and Dorothy, have completed their college journey at the University of Ghana!!! They are both the first girls in their families to complete college. Learn more about their stories below.

When we met Rebecca, she was commuting between her hometown in the eastern region of Ghana and the University of Ghana in Accra, the capital city, every day because of her inability to afford staying on campus. The journey took close to 4 hours a day. Once her father lost his job, she could not even afford the commute so she was unable to continue attending college. We intervened and covered her full tuition and boarding expenses so she could re-enroll and live on campus. As of May 21, 2017, Rebecca has completed a degree in Psychology with an "A" grade point average. In the future, she plans to get her M.A. in psychology.

When we met Dorothy, she was unsure of how she would complete her last year of college. Up until then, she had worked various jobs to support her education and help with her 15 siblings, but had run out of resources right at the end. We intervened in her final year and covered her full tuition. As of May 21, 2017 she has completed a degree in Political Science and plans to pursue a M.A. degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy. We are so proud of her!
